Deadman Wonderland 01 – Dead Man Walking
“Dead Man Walking”
Ah, this post is rather late. Been pretty busy with that thing called a social life. I forget I have that sometimes. In any case, I’ve been pretty pumped for this show, just by the synopsis alone. I think we have a pyschological thriller/horror show on our hands here. We’re gonna deal with injustice, violence, death, abuse, massacres, anxiety. Damn, for a show set in a theme park, this show looks like it’s going to be pretty gruesome. And I was told it was going to be a one cour show. NO. I don’t think it’ll be enough. I read up on a lot of the background behind Deadman Wonderland, and well…shit is going to go DOWN. I’m not too familar with Manglobe‘s history with doing sequels, but if they gave The World God Only Knows a second season, they should probably do the same for this show too, because I don’t think I would want to see this go down the anime ending path (unless otherwise they make it a good one).
Innocent Little Ganta
To be honest, I was surprised how much we got through in one episode. I was pretty much expecting the episiode to go like this. A little monologue from Ganta about his life, a bit of backstory, meet his friends, maybe a little bit of filler, enter random shit for 10 minutes here, THEN the class gets utterly murdered, Ganta gets blamed for the crime and is sent to Deadman Wonderland and then the episode ends there. But no, they wasted no time sending in the man cloaked in blood red to fucking kill everyone. I’m sure it isn’t coincidence that most of class room was really dark. I’m putting it down to censoring, which is most likely what it is. With Ganta being the only survivor, the red man implants a red jewel shard within his chest. Hm. Sooner or later, Ganta is then arrested for suspicion of the mass murder of his entire class. He is then proven guilty, even though there’s no actual proof he did it. It was quite heart-wrenching seeing Ganta scream for his innocence after he is sentenced to death, and to see him get beat up by the parents of his friends and classmates. A video is then shown, showing Ganta (or a look-alike) speaking to Tamaki about a bunch of stuff, mainly about how he killed the kids. The video is obviously a fake, forged evidence, but all the odds are against our innocent little Ganta. Tamaki claims that a secret video was recorded and was leaked to the media.
I’m sorry, but I kinda noticed something, though I may be wrong about this. In this “leaked” video we see a fake Ganta, and his face is completely fine. No wounds or nothing. And the Ganta we see here now is wounded with patches and bandages on his face. Heck, he’s been wounded ever since the damn massacre up until trial day. INCONSITENCIES. Are you telling me NO ONE noticed this? All that aside, do people really think a 14 year old middle schooler could have committed a murder on such a large scale?
Welcome To Deadman Wonderland
So, our innocent little Ganta is sent off to Deadman Wonderland. Deadman Wonderland is run by none other than Tamaki, Ganta’s FREAKIN’ DEFENCE ATTORNEY. The titular Deadman Wonderland is Japan’s sole private prison which was built after the Great Tokyo Earthquake (OH BOY, JAPAN AND EARTHQUAKES. KIND OF A SENSITIVE SUBJECT RIGHT NOW GUYS). To the public and tourists that visit Deadman Wonderland on a regular basis, it is basically a massive theme park-like facility run by the prison inmates. On the inside, it’s a different story. Much more gruesome as Chief Guard Makina, bearing a G-Cup bust show us how nasty and harsh things can get, especially if you don’t follow the rules. SHE DOES NOT FUCK ABOUT. So anyway, Ganta and the rest of the inmates aren’t gonna sit in a cell all day. We see Ganta working outside, having memories of his best friends, until he meets Shiro (who’s voiced by Kana Hanazawa). She apparently knows Ganta from God knows where, and that she’s able to read the truth within his heart. Shiro believes in him. Well, that’s great and all, but he’s still on death row. Death row inmates have to eat a special candy that add an additional 72 hours to their timer on their collars before they die. Some people are desperate enough to hold other inmates hostage, just to get some. Back at the site where Ganta is, Shiro is out cold on the floor after having been knocked out by a few other inmates, even though the girl does possess some good fighting skills. The higher-ups, namely Tsunenaga Tamaki plan to kill Ganta by “accident” and on cue, comes the “accident” as a building explodes with the debris about to fall upon Ganta, the inmates and Shiro. However, Ganta’s resovle to find and kill the Red Man as well as prove his innocences awakens the power of the red shard within him and he does a Bloody Rasengan to save himself. Hardcore.
Deadman Wonderland is going to be one of those shows. THOSE SHOWS. Manglobe hasn’t done too much stuff, with their most popular and recent work being The World God Only Knows, but I’m really liking the production on this. The show is chilling, and brutal. God, did anyone remember the music that was playing during the massacre and its aftermath? Man, this show is gonna be a memorable one, and after it’s done, I suggest everyone should read the manga (myself included). Of course, unless the producers mess this up, then well…I’ll probably cry.
DISCLAIMER: I HATE NARUTO.
