Houkago no Pleiades
So, Houkago no Pleiades. What was it even supposed to be? I mean, I guess it was to promote the Subaru car manufacturer, but I don’t see this helping Subaru’s sales that much. I don’t think a fuck was given about Subaru and everyone checked this show out because…well…GAINAX were the ones behind this. So anyway, I did watch this the second it came out on YouTube, so I watched it raw, and then Nutbladder subbed it, so I decided to watch it again, subbed. So I could at least understand what the heck was going on.
There were four episodes released simultaneously and each of them are 5 minutes long. The first episode basically introduced us to the main character, who’s conveniently named Subaru. Oh boy. We see her stumble into a new world like Narnia: The Witch and The Wardrobe. There she meets a guy called Minato and the two briefly begin to enjoy each other’s company.
The rest of the cast isn’t shown until Episode 2 where Subaru, once again, stumbles into a room with 4 girls inside. The girls are (from left to right in the above picture) Nanako, Aoi, Itsuki (black-haired girl) and Hikaru (blonde-chick). Subaru is already familiar with Aoi, but Aoi doesn’t want Subaru to get involved with what they’re doing because she’s an idiot. And she truly is. She wants to get involved in whatever they’re doing and SHE DOESN’T CARE WHAT MAY HAPPEN. So she gets her own magical girl transformation and off they go as they take to the skies on their brooms to collect Star Engine Fragments. Stars? Great, just what I need. Another Starry Sky-themed concept.
If anything, something like this is rather new. Sure, everything isn’t explained all that well, and the purpose of this show’s existence hangs in the midst of fog, I did rather…find it intriguing. The show itself wasn’t bad, I just didn’t know what was going on. I guess this was funded and back by Subaru. That’s the only possible role I can think of for them in this joint collaboration. Everything was rather pretty, and the character designs, while a bit common for magical girl anime, looked quite pretty. And all the fan/concept art that was shown during the ED was pretty cool.
