Freezing 01 – The Untouchable Queen [NSFW]

Welcome to the world of Freezing.

「Untouchable Queen」

Yes, that [NSFW] is there for a reason. To my surprise, this show was broadcast uncensored, meaning that there is nudity. I personally hate censoring, but this still came to a bit of a surprise. In any case, after hearing that Freezing was getting an anime adaption, I decided to take a sneak peak at the manga to see it was about. I ended up reading til the end of the 4th volume. I enjoyed reading what I read of the manga, and I was ready for this show. Freezing is sexy, epic, and BRUTAL. Still, I was rather disappointed by the first episode, but only as a reader of the manga. As an episode, it wasn’t all that bad. Also for some reason, this was broadcast in 4:3 aspect ratio whilst the OP and ED retained in 16:9 aspect ratio with a letterboxed cropping. I gotta say, after watching so many things in 16:9, watching this 4:3 felt a little off. Notable voice talents in this are Mamiko Noto who’s playing Bridgette, Nobuhiko Okamoto who’s playing Arthur, and Eri Kitamura who’s playing Ganessa.

The animation during the OP felt a little old school to me, which isn’t a problem, since the entire show feels that way. This is an adaptation by A.C.G.T after all. Also, I noticed that Bridgette more or less dominated the entire OP which I found quite disappointing. It’d have been nice to see some of the other characters get some spotlight as well. As for the actual song, I kind of like it.

The Untouchable Queen. If you ask me, this title shouldn't have been used for this episode, even if it is the title of the first chapter in the manga (or manhwa or whatever you wanna call it).

There isn’t much to talk about, mainly for the fact that not much happened in this episode. I was expecting a lot more from this episode but they decided to do things a little different, which I can understand since this show is only going to have 12 episodes. This episode basically set the setting for show and went on to explain about the aliens called “Novas” and the Pandoras who are the female combatants with the genes scientifically modified allowing them to have their limbs repaired and have physical abilities far exceeding that of a normal human. It also explains how chosen Limiters are usually young boys since the sync rate for the Ereinbar Set between that is significantally higher if the Limiter is a young male. Limiters have this thing called the Freezing ability. This allows them to “freeze” an area, immobillizing any Pandoras within it’s range. Interestingly, the Novas have this same power, and since it’s the Pandoras who fight the Novas they must have their Limiters use their own Freezing power to neutralize the effect. Everything is fed to you from the get go so you know what the heck is going on.

I honestly wasn't expecting her to have the voice that she has in the anime, AT ALL.

Readers of the manga would definitely have noticed the order of things the anime showed. The first episode also decided to go into the backstory of Kazuha Aoi’s (who beared a striking resemblance to Bridgette) sacrifice during the Eighth Nova Crash four years ago. However, the manga didn’t even touch upon that backstory until like…Volume 4 of the manga, I think? I forget. Anyway, it was kind of interesting that they decided to make that the focus in the first episode, wouldn’t you think?

A Type-S Nova. Really powerful. Doesn't fuck around.

How is Kazuha relevant? Well, 4 years ago a bunch of Type-S (really powerful) Nova came crashing down on Earth and it was up to Yumi Kim, Elise Schimitz and other high-ranking Pandoras to take ‘em out. The big daddy of the Novas was left and was able to decapitate a lot of people’s limbs, including Yumi’s. To save everyone, Kazuha Aoi struck the Nova’s core, killing herself in the process to save Japan. She’s renowned as a hero. So basically, Kazuha is a pretty big deal.

Bridgette. She takes no prisoners.

But that’s just the explanation part. We see some pretty gory bits, thanks to Bridgette who shows no fucking remorse, but is also really cute. She won’t hesitate to chop off your limbs, or slash your throat. She will kill if given the chance. She takes her fights seriously and has never lost a single fight. That is why she’s known as the Untouchable Queen (which is the title of the first chapter of the manga).

I was rather surprised to see that this show was broadcasted uncensored. For a moment, I thought I had downloaded a Blu-Ray release.

Now what is interesting here is that only about 5-10 pages of the first chapter of the manga were actually covered in this episode. During the Carnival, which is like a battle-royale type of event, Ganessa Roland takes Bridgette on. But she gets taken out fast.

Well, almost...

Then Bridgette appears to finish the job but because she resembles Kazuha, Kazuya, her younger brother and the main guy in this show who I haven’t mentioned at all until now, hugs Bridgette from behind and accidentally triggers a Freezing effect around her causing her to lose a battle for the first time by the hands of Ganessa. I would have to say that the way it ended did kind of leave me wanting more, especially since I know what’s gonna happen next but we won’t get that until next episode. I must note that the music was composed by Yokoyama Masaru, and if you were paying attention to the score this episode then you’d agree that you heard some pretty epic pieces of music, especially from 19mins in during the Carnival fights.

The ED was interesting to LOOK at, as it gives a little preview of the characters we’ll see along the course of the series. Lana <3

I only noticed it with this girl, but look at her SHADOW. You notice that the shadow isn't complete the same as her image?

End Card.
