Yumekui Merry 01 – Dreams and Reality

Dream Reality

「夢現」 (Yume Utsutsu)
“Dream Reality”

I gotta say I was pretty excited for this show to premiere. I’ll tell you what, though. I was almost going to give this show a miss. I gave a quick read-through at the synopsis and thought “That’s weird.” and moved on. And then I decided to take a quick peek at the manga; just the first Chapter 1 and found it rather interesting. This is an adaptation made by J.C Staff. Sometimes their animation is good, sometimes they get a bit lazy. Also one thing of note is that some fresh voice talent are in this show like Ai Kayano who plays Itsuwa in Toaru Majutsu no Index II. And then there’s Ayane Sakura who is playing Merry in this show. I believe this is her first major role, and she also happens to be singing the show’s ED song.

Daydream Syndrome
by Marina Fujiwara

Yep. Yep. This is definitely deserves a spot on my favourite OPs this season. The song is called Daydream Syndrome by Marina Fujiwara. The visuals were nice, and we got to see more or less all the characters that we’ll be introduced to throughout the series.

Meet Merry Nightmare. Not the best of first impressions, huh.

The episode went pretty much the same way as how the first  chapter and half of the second chapter of the manga went, with a few noticable changes. For instance, where the scenes take place. There wasn’t much in the way of any highlights in the episode, though that isn’t to say it was completely pointless. The episode did it’s job of setting the scene, the characters and the situation.

I mean, I have I had to do that to use my power, then I just wouldn't use it.

You’ve got the main character, Yumeji Fujiwara who has the ability to see the coloured auras of people, and that will be able to tell him what kind of dream they will have that night. Yumeji is still practicing his power so his accuracy isn’t all that well, but there’s one color that’s always 100% accurate. That’s the color black, the color that denotes that that person will have a nightmare that night. It’s interesting how Yumeji’s friends are aware of his power and that it isn’t some sort of secret to them. Speaking of his friends, we are introduced to them briefly. We’ve got a tomboyish girl named Saki Kirishima, a poetic pretty boy named Takateru Akiyanagi and then there’s that typical female childhood friend who clearly harbours feelings for the main character but constantly denies it named Isane Tachibana. I MEAN, SURE HAVEN’T SEEN THAT SET-UP BEFORE.

Here's some more Merry cuteness.

And some more for good measure.

Now Yumeji’s problem is that he keeps on having nightmares everyday that involve having wars with cats. Now, one day, by chance, our girl Merry falls on top of Yumeji and loses her hat. He encounters a cat, and then all of a sudden the cats from his dreams appear in the real world. And here comes the big bad boss of the cats, Chaser John Doe, who’s voiced by Jouji Nakata. This badass wields a guilotine/chainsaw weapon. But anyway, Merry appears to save Yumeji just in time. Apparently Chaser is looking for a vessel.

;3 Wait, what crows?

OH SHI-!

So anyway, here’s the thing about Merry. I like her. I like her style. I like her swagger. So when she came into this scene, she came in like a boss. Anyway, it appears that Merry has a predicament of her own. She’s apparently not from the real world. She was simply stranded there with no idea how to get back. She introduces herself as Merry Nightmare and demands that Chaser takes her back to the World of Dreams. FIGHT TIME.

Merry is a strong one if she's able to clothesline Chaser outside the building.

She has a habit of bending down a lot...

STRAIGHT PUNCH. RIGHT IN THE GUT.

Yumeji does his part to help...

And the finshing move. YOUSOUSHUUGEKI!!

After winning, she demands that he takes her back to her world, and Chaser implies that he knows a little something about Merry. Chaser disappears into nowhere and Merry tells Yumeji to bring him back. However he can’t.

D'awwww...

The episode draws to close as Chaser says that there’s something he needs to chase and then we see a mysterious girl in the end. Don’t know what her deal is yet.

Yume to Kibou to Ashita no Atashi (ユメとキボーとアシタのアタシ)
by Ayane Sakura

There wasn’t much to see in this ED other than Merry basked in the midst of rose petals. The ending was sung by Ayane Sakura, the same person who voices Merry in the show, which is appropriate.

Next Episode: Dreams and Hopes

In the next episode, it seems that Isana will play some sort of role. She seems to be the more important one out of Yumeji’s group of friends. I mean that’s understandable, given that she has a crush on the guy. So, I’m going to read the second chapter of the manga, because I’m missing this series already.
